DC-INSTALLATIONS MADE EASY. Unique, Problem-Solving Solution. Egon DC-Hub
February 2021.
AN AUSSIE WORLD FIRST IN 12-VOLT ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS
As any 4wd owner, caravaner or recreational sailor knows, the outdoor industry has long dreamed of a simple, cost-effective, and foolproof solution to the complexities and safety issues inherent in installing 12-volt accessories and kit. Up to now it’s been one of the most challenging parts of building high-quality DC installations in RVs, caravans and 4wds.
Now, thanks to a pioneering partnership between global four-wheel drive explorer and filmmaker Andrew St Pierre White, and world-class auto electrical engineer Heiner Klaarman, we have such a first: the Egon DC-Hub, the heart of any 12-Volt electrical system.
Back in late 2018 when the Egon DC-Hub was first conceived, White gave Klarmann a simple brief: Design a bolt-on electrical system to cater for start and auxiliary batteries; solar inputs, both regulated and unregulated; modern DC-DC chargers; run lighting; compressors; fridges, and all manner of 12V electric kit. The desired system had to avoid cutting a single manufacturers’ original wiring. In addition, fault diagnostics had to be a breeze. But with one caveat: It must be easy enough for anyone to install.
As coincidence would have it, Klarmann had been thinking of developing a solution to the same problem, repeated daily in his workshop. Serendipity prevailed, and after eight months of development, the result was a hub with integral fuses, where all the main components of a DC installation come together. All of them. And that was the key.
Products that fulfil a similar task are not unusual. But they are all complex, expensive, digital, and take umpteen hours to fit. They are also unsuitable for the everyday man or woman to install. Those that try to be, come in the form of fuse boxes, buss bars and in-line fuses of many sizes that are often scattered around the vehicle.
What fitting the DC-Hub means is that instead of these items being strewn throughout the install, all end up at one place. As does the wiring from different chargers, inputs and outputs, all to one place. The results are all to do with efficiency. It’s a new way of doing a time-worn thing: Running wires, testing and fault finding.
The Egon DC-Hub does a few things really well. For the individual building their own DC installations, it’s going to simplify and speed up the build—by a large measure if the system is a complex one. It takes care of the work that requires the most skills and knowhow to do well. For the manufactures of caravans, trailers and 4wds, the DC-Hub will speed up every build that runs through their shop, very possibly improving output quality, and saving money. In most cases it will also reduce warrantee claims because it’s now far easier for the end user to fault trace.
White and Klarmann completed their design and spent a further year in rigorous testing. After successfully subjecting the product to the worst possible abuse, they have now launched their unique, problem-solving Egon DC-Hub. During the testing period, the system was fitted to 30 test builds. Comments from these participants came in thick and fast.
W.V.BushcraftBoy said, “I cannot possibly love this enough! You have just saved me an insane amount of time on all of my future builds! The only thing I don’t like about this is that I didn’t think of it, and nobody else thought of it before my last dozen or so builds. LOL 😉
Fire to Fork, who was donated a unit, had this to say, “Using this in my build was insanely good. I am not great at wiring and this made me feel like a pro. The conductivity and solid connections are so far beyond anything else on the market. Well done guys.
The first product video was released last week and attracted 16 000 views inside 24 hours.
Heiner’s is a Trade Qualified Auto Electrician and Graduate Automotive Mechatronics Engineer. He has designed and manufactured DC hardware for multiple international and local companies.
Andrew needs less of an introduction as he is one of the world’s most well-known 4wd global explorers, and runs the world’s largest public-funded 4WD channel, 4xOverland.
Australia’s 4WD industry can be justly proud of its many achievements over many decades and is recognized as the leading light in this industry around the world. The Egon DC-Hub surely will follow in these footsteps.
